Is it time to replace your HVAC equipment?
Certain signs indicate it’s time to consider replacing your home’s heating and cooling equipment. Ask yourself the following questions to determine whether or not you should start considering replacement.
1. Does your equipment need frequent repairs?
Sometimes, money spent repairing low-quality or older equipment can be better spent installing newer, more energy-efficient equipment. If your system suffers a major breakdown and is over 10 years old, and if the labor and parts begin to approach $1,000, then replacing the entire system is most likely your best option.
2. Is your furnace or air conditioner more than 15-20 years old?
According to energy.gov, this is the average lifespan of a central air conditioner. The best way to extend (and possibly double!) the life expectancy of your HVAC equipment is to have it serviced annually. Copperhead is offering a special on preseason A/C service for $89 per system through 4/30/17.
3. Is your boiler is more than 20-25 years old?
This is around the time when you should consider replacement. They say age is just a number, and we have seen boilers still operating at over 60 years old. Again, the best way for your boiler to live a long, “healthy” life is to have it serviced annually.
4. Are your energy bills going up?
Your heating and cooling equipment is likely becoming less efficient over time. Even if your equipment is only 10 years old, if replaced with a new high-efficiency unit, you can expect to save 20-40% on heating and cooling costs. Ask us about the many rebates available for installing Energy Star rated equipment.
5. Does your A/C unit require additional refrigerant / is it “low on charge”?
This may signify a refrigerant leak. Finding the leak, repairing the leak, and adding several pounds of refrigerant can easily cost over $1,000. If you have an old unit that takes R-22 (which the EPA is phasing out by 2020 due to its ozone-depleting properties) that is leaking, you should absolutely consider replacing your equipment. R-22 prices have skyrocketed in recent years due to the EPA’s phase-out. R-410A, a more environmentally-friendly refrigerant, will replace it.
6. Consider how well your system is performing.
Do you feel like you have to toggle with your thermostat constantly to stay comfortable? Does your air conditioner or furnace make noises when it starts up? Does your air feel stuffy or damp?
If any of these issues are getting in the way of your home comfort, it may time to get a new system installed. Copperhead Plumbing, Heating & Air Conditioning can help with any questions you may have regarding repairing or replacing your equipment.
