To replace that hot water, cold water enters the bottom of the tank, which ensures that the tank is always full. Heat sources include electric elements, gas burners, oil burners or a hot water boiler. Standard gas water heaters operate at a much lower cost than electric units, in the same way a gas clothes dryer is much cheaper to operate than an electric one.

Since water is constantly heated in the storage tank, energy is constantly being used and can be wasted even when hot water isn't running in the house. This is called standby heat loss. Tankless Water Heaters

The new European-style tankless water heaters make hot water as needed and reduce standby losses, such as when a tank of hot water is stored overnight. When a hot water faucet is turned on in the house, water is heated as it flows through a heating coil or heat exchanger in the unit. These are around 99% efficient whereas a conventional gas water heater is 75-80% efficient. Tankless water heaters also have better longevity, and will last on average up to 20 years, as compared to conventional storage water heaters, whose lifespan ranges from 10-13 years on average.
